Billie Eilish – Bossa Nova

Eilish exudes sensuality on “Billie Bossa Nova,” revealing that she and her partner have been using false identities at hotels to conceal their identities. This song, which uses a beat made by FINNEAS in 2019, has the same melody structure as Billie’s R&B hit from November 2017 called “bitches broken hearts.”

Regarding the title, Billie mentioned Antonio Carlos Jobim, the father of Brazilian bossa nova, as a major source of inspiration for the sonority of the sound on her second studio album, Happier Than Ever, during an interview with Madame Figaro in July 2021.

It draws inspiration from the bossa-nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim as well as from the musical world that existed before me and left us with a wonderful legacy.

1958 saw the release of João Gilberto’s “Chega de Saudade” (English: No More Blues), which marked the beginning of what Eilish later referred to as this “marvelous heritage.” Composed in 1956 by Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the song gained popularity only after João was released, which also marked the introduction of the distinctive guitar percussion of Bossa Nova.

In addition to this particular quality in guitar playing, young musicians sought to increase the global audience for Brazilian music in the midst of Brazil’s industrialization and urbanization in the late 1950s. The result was that the genre set itself apart from samba music, which had guitars with two-bar patterns and American jazz chords and harmonies. It also had a calm rhythm and a slow tempo.

Bossa Nova’s desire to become well-known outside of Brazil is evident in Happier Than Ever’s third track, which features two young American brothers paying homage to those young Brazilian artists who, seven decades after becoming the foundation of the genre in Brazil, more than fulfilled their desire. Bossa Nova’s most well-known song, Jobim’s “The Girl From Ipanema,” is reportedly the second most recorded song in history, only behind The Beatles’ 1965 ballad “Yesterday.”
