Billie Eilish – Bury A Friend
The third single from American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish’s debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), is “Bury a Friend,” stylized in all lowercase. January 30, 2019 was the release date, and on February 19, 2019, Darkroom and Interscope Records began to distribute it to alternative radio stations in the United States. Press reviews characterized the song as synth-pop, electronica, electropop, and industrial, with minimal instrumentation consisting of a synthesizer, percussion, and hip hop beats. Eilish sings from the perspective of a monster under someone’s bed in the ominous and violent lyrics. She uses layers of vocal effects to enhance her delicate voice. Together with Finneas O’Connell, the song’s producer, Eilish wrote it.
Music critics gave “Bury a Friend” largely positive reviews, with many praising the song’s dark lyrics and tone. The song was also compared to Kanye West, Lorde, and Marilyn Manson. It was a commercial success, peaking at number one in both Latvia and Sweden. The song also reached its highest position in the top ten in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the UK. It received a triple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
