The story of “KAE” centers on Chris’ connection with Karrueche Tran, also known as Kae, his ex-girlfriend.
After it was revealed that Chris was the parent of Royalty, who was then 9 months old, while in a relationship with model Nia Guzman, Kae officially dumped Chris in March 2015. She called Chris out in June 2015, telling him to “man the fuck up” and “change the bs.” She went into greater detail about her issues with Chris in a July 2015 interview with Ryan Secrest, stating that Chris couldn’t be angry with her as he was the one who cheated on her.
The song “KAE” is written and sung from Karrueche’s perspective of their breakup, displaying Chris’ introspection and his vocals being pitched down.
With Chris’ vocals pitched up to sound more feminine, “KAE” is written and performed from Karrueche’s perspective of the breakdown of their relationship, revealing Chris’ introspection. On the bridge, he sings from his own point of view as he realizes that he is to blame, without pitching his voice.
