Eminem – Stepping Stone
The most recent in a string of songs “Stepping Stone” is an apology to those who have been harmed by Em’s career. His mother Debbie Mathers and his ex-wife Kim Mathers received apologies in the previously published songs “Headlights” and “Bad Husband,” respectively. The song “Stepping Stone” is dedicated to D12, Em’s rap crew.
Em’s solo success gave D12 a boost, propelling them into the spotlight. Devil’s Night and D12 World, two of their albums, both debuted at number one and went on to sell millions of copies. The group, however, lost its momentum after the unexpected passing of member Proof in 2006.
In this song, the term “stepping stone” is used to describe how D12 ended up giving Em’s career an unintended boost while the other members of D12 were eventually left behind. Notably, Em declares that D12 is over in the final stanza and that the group has now formally broken up.
