This song is about the hypocrisy of many Muslims and Christians, particularly those in positions of authority. It was composed after his mother was killed (murdered) by Nigerian military personnel after she fell from an upper floor window during a military raid on Fela’s home in the Kalakuta Republic.
He went to the barracks where the Muslim “vice president” (Yar’Aduwa) and the Christian president at the time (Obasanjo) would have been staying and carried a coffin (representing that of his mother) and summoned them to collect their debts (which they failed to do).
