J.Cole – Kerney Sermon (Skit)

This skit is made up of two excerpts from a sermon by televangelist Pastor Kerney Thomas. It’s this sermon here:

Thomas promises salvation and “miracles” to those who order his products—effectively ripping desperate people off and making money with empty promises.

The sermon illustrates this line from one of Cole’s previous projects:

How they got these niggas on the TV selling miracles?

You mean to tell me everything gon’ be fine

If I call your hotline and pay $29.99? (Shit)

It’s likely that Cole uses the skit to draw parallels between TV swindlers and the music industry. In the same way in which Pastor Thomas promises redemption in exchange for money, record labels promise easy money in exchange for an artist’s creative soul. On the previous track “Villuminati,” Cole admits to having ‘sold out’ once.

The skit furthers the religious themes of Born Sinner. Additionally, the skit contains elements of Outkast’s “Da Art of Storytellin’ (Pt. 1)”, further sampled in the album’s subsequent track, “LAnd of the Snakes.”
