Lagos Police Remodels Gender-Based Violence Centre

Joke Sanwo-Olu @JokeSanwoolu

It was a pleasure today to receive in audience the Commissioner of Police, @LagosPoliceNG Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, and members of the Steering Committee working on the remodeling of the Command’s Gender-Based Violence and Family Support Center.

I am humbled by the decision of the Command to name the Center after me in recognition of the modest efforts we have so far championed to scale up the fight against the menace of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

It is gratifying that the center is projected to accommodate facilities such as a clinic to provide medical and psychosocial support to victims, a therapy office, a shelter room, a modern call center, an interrogation room, detention rooms, children’s play area, administrative offices, restaurant, Church and Mosque, as well as quarters for officers on duty, among others.

It was instructive that as part of the plan to ensure professionalism in handling SGBV cases, 30 police officers were trained on the sensitive nature of sexual crimes, while plans are underway to train more officers and also increase the Police Family Support Units in the state.

For me, I will continue to welcome and support initiatives aimed at stamping out the menace of SGBV in our state and country. It is the right thing to do and the right way to go to protect our women and girls and also our men and boys.

No one should be subjected to such violent crimes. SGBV remains a crime against humanity and a pandemic that must be thrown into the dustbin of history. People are encouraged not only to say something when they see something but also do something. Police is our friend and family!
